Next class starts in the summer
Bishop Renato Cardoso and other pastors have been teaching a preparatory ministry course in Houston, Texas for young men and women who aspire to do the work of God.
The course consists of daily classroom teachings and requires students to be involved in various church activities including street evangelism, counseling, praying and assisting in both English and Spanish services. These activities are designed to get them to grow both spiritually and mentally. The course aims to form men and women for ministry as pastors, assistant pastors, and full-time assistants.
Bishop David Higginbotham, one of the course teachers, says, “It’s not enough for students to answer the proper questions or do the activities we ask them to do. We are looking for people with God’s Spirit and dedicated to do His work because it’s not something that they’ll be doing for one day or a year, but for the rest of their lives.”
The first course began last September with a group of nineteen young men but only eight completed the first stage of the course. Bishop Renato explains why only a few manage to stay on the course: “The work of God is the most important work in the world – more than architecture, technology, engineering, medicine, etc. although those professions are indeed very important. So it takes a very special kind of person to do it. Mainly, it takes someone who is willing to sacrifice his or her whole life to God, everyday, and never look back. Unfortunately, not many people are as ready to do that as they would like to think.”
Those who remain on the second stage of the course, which is the practical stage, are now assisting pastors in churches around the country including San Antonio, Miami, Chicago, Newark, Los Angeles, and New York City.
Kemar Anderson, 18, is one of the eight who remain on the course and is now working in Los Angeles. He tells us, “When I applied and was approved to attend the course, I was excited. I wanted to serve God and I knew that this was a great opportunity to see if it was really my calling. This training has helped me to grow spiritually, mentally and to realize my weaknesses and my strengths. I’ve learned what it takes to be a man of God and continue to learn and grow more every day.”
The next course starts at the end of July 2010. Applicants must be between the ages of 16-24 and be personally recommended by their local pastor. If you feel you have a calling to do the work of God but lack preparation to do it, ask your pastor how you can join.
