Are curses for real?
"If you do not obey the voice of the LORD your God... all these curses will come upon you and overtake you." Deuteronomy 28:15
What is a curse? In simple terms, a curse is a statement expressing a wish that harm, misfortune, injury, or great evil be brought upon another person. People are said to be cursed if harm comes to them regularly or in a greater amount compared to the rest of us. If being blessed means being happy, successful, enjoying favor in all you do, being cursed is the exact opposite. But do curses really exist? Or are they simply a way to explain bad things that happen that we don't understand?
Some people dismiss the idea of curses as pure superstition. Others, however, wish curses really were only superstition, a fruit of their imagination. At least then they wouldn't have to put up with their terrible effects.
One man recently told me that all the daughters on one side of his family could not have children. Another lady gave testimony about her grandmother, her mother, herself and her two children suffering from a condition that affected their joints. Of course both examples could suggest a genetic or hereditary disease that affects members of the family. But even then, the question is, why is it happening to that family?
Why is it that in certain families no one - I stress, NO ONE - seems to be happy in marriage? Is it simply coincidence?
Why is it that some people always seem to end up alone, no matter how hard they try to socialize and form relationships?
Why is it that some people used to lead a normal life until suddenly everything went haywire unexplainably, and they have never been able to recover from it?
I could go on and on with many similar questions, and I'm sure that sceptics could also find an explanation for every one of them and just dismiss it as "coincidence" or simply say "that's life."
Whether curses really exist or not must be answered together with another question: whether you believe in God or not. Those who don't believe in God tend to look for a rational, scientific explanation for everything. They simply don't accept that there are some things in this world that just can't be rationalized or explained scientifically. And even those that can, the reasons or explanations they find still cannot, in the end, provide the solution to the problem.
If you believe in God, however, you have to accept one thing: God talks about curses in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Would He talk about something that is not true? Would God even mention "curse" if it didn't exist? And conversely, God also speaks of those who find "favor" in His eyes and in the eyes of others. Obviously there is something more than coincidence going on, but spiritual influences that either bless or harm us whether we believe in them or not.
If we believe in God and in His Word, we have to accept that these influences exist and are very real still today.
This Friday we are going to begin a series of teaching and prayers based on the Word of God, on how you can stop being held back - how you can find God's favor that will go with you wherever you are.
It is going to be a life-changing experience. Be ready.
