The angel announces that Gideon is the deliverer

The angel announces that Gideon is the deliverer: (Judges 6.14-16)

The Lord looks at HIM and says, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?” Upon hearing this, Gideon freaks out. He gives God a list of his impossibilities and complexes.

“What might? I’m the least amongst the poor!” And God gives him an answer – the same answer that He gave to Moses, when Moses asked Him, “Who am I to deliver the people?”: God says, “I am with you. And because I am with you, you will do extraordinary things.”

Here, we see the difference between what God thought of Gideon and what Gideon thought of himself. God saw Gideon as someone He can use. Gideon saw himself as a little worm in the desert. But God was the One who was going to deliver His people, so it is He who sets the criteria for defining who can and cannot be used.

The change of spirit is a matter of ceasing to be the person who looks at their human condition and depends on it, to become someone who has the Holy Spirit and looks at themselves from God’s perspective; someone who realises that if they are with Him, they will be able to do exactly what He does because the victory will come from Him. And because of that trust in Him, you can trust in yourself and take action.
