When it comes to love between a man and a woman, I’ve already said what true love isn’t. Unfortunately, many people have lost the notion of what love really is, and have suffered a lot as a result. True love still exists, even though it’s been despised, forgotten, and gone unnoticed to people like a beggar who mingles with the dirty city street. It’s not to blame for this mess.

What is true love, after all?

In one word: sacrifice.

Love is making sacrifices for the person you care about. Therefore, it’s not a feeling, but a decision marked by action and the denial of your self. When you truly love someone, that person’s well-being and happiness are much more important to you than your personal interests. For that reason, true love is much more than just sex, gifts, or romantic declarations.

Why has this kind of love become so rare? Why is it so foreign to most people?

Because just like that beggar who is invisible to society, so has God been to them. The Bible says that God is love. If people don’t know God, how will they know love? If they live like God doesn’t exist and treat Him with total indifference, even though He’s perfect, how can they love someone so imperfect — even if it’s their boyfriend, fiancée, husband or wife?

It’s a paradox. People run from what they want the most. And so they go on living empty lives, blind, unhappy, and miserable.

It makes me wonder: perhaps they are the real beggars.
