The angel appears to Gideon: (Judges 6:11-13)

Gideon threshes wheat in the winepress. Brave and hardworking but hiding in fear of the Midianites. The angel comes in response to the people’s cry and tells Gideon that God is with him. Gideon doesn’t even understand what the angel said, since in his reply, he questions: “If the Lord is with us, why have these things happened to us?”. But the angel did not say that the Lord was with them. He said that the Lord was with him.

Gideon did not see himself as an individual, he saw himself as a collective with the rest of the people. In that first moment, it doesn’t even cross his mind that he is being chosen as a deliverer. Gideon was not among the people who heard the prophet, and that was the reason behind his question. But God certainly chose him because he remained faithful, unlike the rest of the people, who feared false gods. He considered God’s wonders and knew that if God was with Israel, they would not have been living that way.
