2nd OBSERVATION OF JESUS, FOR YOU (this one is periodic)

Do you want to know how your relationship with God is going?

Previously, we discussed an observation of the Lord Jesus: baptism in the waters. Today, we will discuss a second observation that the Lord Jesus left us: the Lord’s Supper.

The Lord’s Supper is based on Easter when God brought the Hebrew people out of slavery in Egypt. So they had to sacrifice a lamb. They would leave for the Promised Land and had to mark the doorframes with the blood of the lamb because the spirit of death would pass over all of Egypt, wounding the firstborn of every family that did not have the mark of the lamb’s blood. So they ate that lamb with bitter herbs and unleavened bread (symbolising all the bitterness, sadness and slavery they lived in Egypt).

Now, the Lord Jesus reduced the Lord’s Supper to a piece of bread and grape juice. And there, He symbolised that we left the old covenant of Egypt, presented in the Old Testament, replacing it with a new covenant (greater and better). The new covenant would no longer be by the blood of lambs but by the blood of the Son of God. And what would happen now was not the abandonment of land in Egypt, of slavery, but of life. So, the Lord’s Supper represents that we leave behind the old life of slavery and begin a new life with God, looking at the Promised Land (our life in Heaven). That’s why the Lord Jesus, when he instituted the Lord’s Supper, said: “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me” (1 Corinthians 11:24) and “(…) you proclaim the Lord’s death til He comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26).

Why did the Lord Jesus tell us to celebrate the Lord’s Supper regularly and not only once? We can understand the Lord’s Supper from the point of view of the past, present and future.

• Past: the Lord Jesus commanded us to remember His death. The Lord’s Supper refers us to the cross. He gave His life for us in perfect sacrifice. Jesus became this lamb of the blood of the doorframes of Egypt. And His blood is placed not on the doors, but on us. So that the spirit of death cannot touch those covered by the blood of the Lord Jesus. And we also remember where the Lord Jesus took us from, the life of slavery in Egypt that we used to live. And yet, He loved us, forgave us, saved us and brought us to His marvellous light.
• Present: We can’t eat from the bread and drink from the cup in any way. What is my spiritual condition before God? And if something condemns us, we must solve it as soon as possible. Our communion with God cannot be tarnished by disobedience.
• Future: the Lord’s Supper makes us think of Heaven. It reminds us that we are on a journey towards our destination. Are you sure you are approved before God? Or have you already lost your way?
