A swear word you didn’t know

<
Long ago I decided to treat the word “wait” like a swear word. I realized that, save for rare exceptions, there is always something we can do about a situation instead of just “wait”.

It is clear that “waiting confidently in the Lord” involves faith, trust, absence of anxiety — and should be practiced. But “waiting” when used in place of an action verb is just an excuse.

Do a test. Every time you catch yourself saying this swear word (trust me, if you treat it as a swear word, it works much better), stop and see if there is anything you can do instead of just “wait”.

“I’m waiting for that guy to call me so I…” Okay, stop right there. Are you sure you can’t do anything about this matter except wait for that call? What if you call the guy yourself? Or maybe somebody else could give you the same information or decision? And what do you plan on doing after the call? Can’t you start on that right now and move things forward? Chances are that you will find something that can be done. So, what are you waiting for?

Even when you have to “wait on God”, there is always something you can do while you wait. David waited on God for many years to be made king of Israel. But while waiting, he fought wars, recruited and trained a personal army, wrote psalms, made alliances with leaders in Israel and in other nations, and prepared himself for kingship. He clearly didn’t just sit there waiting.

The same happened with most heroes of faith.

Perhaps you have been “waiting” for the right person to marry, or for the right time to start your own business, or for someone to make a decision that will affect you. But what are you doing about it, while you wait?
