You ask for patience and expect Him to make you more patient. Actually, He puts you through situations where you have to be patient.

You say you want to be more obedient and expect Him to change your heart and make you want to obey, but He gives you opportunities to be obedient.

You ask for courage and expect Him to take all your fears away and fill you with boldness, but then He allows you to be face-to-face with your biggest fears so you can overcome them.

Then, you will think that God does not answer your prayers, when in fact it is you who neither notice nor seize these opportunities.

God does not give us ready-made things; He does not do magic tricks. He helps us develop what He has already given us. Every human being is born with patience, obedience, courage and other virtue — all we need to do is to be alert to every opportunity to practice these things.
