David was the eighth and youngest son of Jesse, and therefore treated with contempt by his own father. Because he was still young, he tended to the sheep while his adult brothers went to war.

But this young man was of FAITH, so much so that he had overcome a bear and a lion, when they tried to get to the sheep in his father’s flock. David knew that nothing and no one could challenge the God of Israel – especially the uncircumcised giant Goliath.

Since FAITH walks hand in hand with VISION and COURAGE, David asked what would be done with the man that defeated the giant.

The promise was as follows:
1. The king will enrich him with great riches;
2. The king will give him his daughter in marriage;
3. The king will exempt his father’s house from taxes in Israel.

That’s it!
David was neglected by his father and brothers, so imagine what was going through his mind after hearing these things!

He had a vision of how his life would be. And he knew that the God of Israel would not forsake him. After all, it was the honor of God Himself that was being challenged.

Then, the only thing missing was COURAGE. And David had plenty of that!

He did not need armor or a sword to overcome the uncircumcised giant. All he needed was the courage to act.

Though his life was at risk, David knew Who he believed in.

Moreover David said, “The LORD, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

There was no way King Saul could stop him.

And Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you!” 1 Samuel 17.37

The young man then took five rocks from the brook – but, in fact, he only needed one.

David threw the stone, but God was the One who directed it at the giant’s forehead.

This neglected boy eventually became one of the greatest kings of Israel.

The stone (Jesus) used by David was already in the brook. Anyone could have thrown that stone at the giant.

But where did the FAITH, VISION, and COURAGE of young David come from?

Before this battle, Samuel had anointed him, and the Spirit of the Lord had come upon David.

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David. 1 Samuel 16.13

This is why God gives us His Spirit. It’s not to speak in tongues or praise Him, but to have the FAITH, VISION (imagination) and COURAGE to take the necessary actions.
