The spirit of sin
“The soul who sins shall die…” Ezekiel 18:20
Sin is a spirit. Just like there is a spirit of infirmity, a spirit of addiction, a spirit of murder, a spirit of pedophilia, a spirit of lies, a spirit of sexual immorality, a spirit of deceit, of corruption, of theft, etc., etc. Every and all sin carries with it an evil spirit.
Its goal is to spread unrighteousness, injustice, disorder and rebellion against the kingdom of righteousness – the kingdom of God – and even more, to steer people’s souls to hell – ground zero for the realm of unrighteousness and the source of evil spirits. This is where all who die in unrighteousness will eventually go.
“If you do well, shall you not be accepted? But if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must rule over it.” Genesis 4:7
In other words, God said to Cain, “If you do what is good I will accept you. But if you do what is evil, sin is at the door to your soul, ready to fill you with the desire to sin, and it’s up to you to take dominion over it.”
When the LORD says that sin is “crouching at the door”, this confirms the existence of evil spirits that encourage sin, which leads to death. But if a person is possessed with the Holy Spirit, the spirit of sin will not have dominion over him. “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the law, but under grace.” Romans 6:14
As with evil spirits, sin speaks, instructs and whispers its thoughts of doubt in an effort to influence the choices of the unsuspecting and naïve. The person who obeys it automatically becomes its servant. And the more a person sins the more he is enslaved.
