The Spirit of the Word

Words have power…

Words have power. As the saying goes, “Whoever speaks, plants; whoever hears, reaps.” However, either one reaps the fruit of the word. The lack of perception towards this has caused serious losses, not only to those who speak but also to those who believe in the words spoken.

Often, people speak for the sake of speaking. Sometimes, they speak out of the self-centredness of not wanting to listen. Others babble on just to keep up with the conversation. In any case, every form of blah-blah-blah has its good or bad effects.

Say a mother tells her daughter: “This that you are doing to me, your children will do worse to you.” The years pass and it is the daughter’s turn to face worse situations with her children. Therefore, she lives out her mother’s ‘curse’.

Few people know that the word has spirit. If the word is evil, it produces sadness, pain and death. However, if it is good, it brings joy, health and life.

Jesus used the power of words to heal the sick and deliver the oppressed, etc. His entire work is summed up in the usage of words.

“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” Luke 4:18-19

However, He also used a word to kill the fig tree. With that, He signalled the power of the word to also do harm.

Those who work in media know this power well. This is the reason why many people hate me without knowing me. They neither affect me nor do they cause me to hate them because I do not drink from their cup. However, I feel for those who have taken sips of their poisons.

Be extremely cautious of the words you hear, “For the ear tests words as the palate tastes food.” Job 34:3
