The Story of Gideon – Part 5
Gideon is afraid of the angel
Gideon is afraid of the angel: (Judges 6.17-22)
Filled with doubt, Gideon asks for proof (the first time) and brings the angel a food offering. He has already shown doubt in himself and now, he doubts that the person he sees is an angel. And he doubts that he is the right recipient of the angel’s message.
He’s still not sure if he is standing before an angel, but when he sees the fire burn up the offering and the angel disappear, and when he realises that it was in fact an angel of the Lord, he fears for his life. Therefore, he exchanges doubt for fear! What a horrible way to live.
Fear was a constant in Gideon’s life. The courage was there, the faith was there, but it was all buried under a layer (or several layers) of fear. But after building the altar and receiving from God the peace he was so thirsty for, Gideon decides to simply obey, though he feared, though he doubted.
And that was the beginning of Gideon’s journey towards the transformation of his life and the history of his people: the decision to simply obey.
