Ugly people cannot do the Work of God!
The title of this message may seem strange, but we are not going to talk about physical beauty!
Instead, we are going to talk about spiritual beauty, which God requires those who do His work to have. So that you can better understand, I invite you to read the following verses. Then you will understand what God really wants to teach us.
Remember that what He said to Moses, in the past, can still be applied to our spiritual life today!
“For any man who has a defect shall not approach: a man blind or lame, who has a marred face or any limb too long, a man who has a broken foot or broken hand, or is a hunchback or a dwarf, or a man who has a defect in his eye, or eczema or scab, or is a eunuch.” Leviticus 21.18-20
Note how, in this passage, the Lord forbid people with defects to serve as priests.
So lets analyze the defects that God mentioned in the list, putting aside the physical aspects in question and using our spiritual eyes:
BLIND – Cannot serve in the work of God. To be good assistants, we need to see with spiritual eyes. Remember Elisha’s servant, who came home crying out, saying: “Prophet! We are surrounded by the enemy army.”
What did the man of God do?
Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And behold, the mountain was full of angels of God, giving them protection (2 Kings 6.17). Therefore, a good assistant must see things with spiritual eyes. He cannot be blind.
LAME – A person that limps. Those who limp are unable to walk at the same pace as everyone else, and end up falling behind. Therefore, God cannot use us if we are limping through life.
MARRED FACE – Refers to the countenance of a person who wants to serve God. Unfortunately, many still don’t understand that a smile and a pleasant countenance are worth more than thousand words.
People come to Church feeling tired and disillusioned with the world; battered by their problems and oppressed by the devil, and, sometimes, they find assistants and pastors with a long face, angry and worried about their own problems!
A LONG LIMB – Disproportionate. A person who has an exaggerated attitude – when he speaks, his behavior, how he relates to his family and friends, the way he dresses, etc. – which causes scandal.
BROKEN FOOT – What happens to a person with a broken foot? He is unable to stand, right? There are many people that want to do the work of God, but they have a broken foot, they cannot stand firm.
In other words, they are here, then move over there; they come and they go… “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…” (1 Corinthians 15.58).
BROKEN HAND – A person that has a broken hand cannot hold anything firmly. And the work of God requires willpower and determination.
HUNCHBACK – Remember that a person who does the work of God cannot walk with his head bowed down. He cannot be hunched over because of fear or shame. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed (2 Timothy 2.15).
DWARF – A person that did not develop in stature. There are many people in Church that find themselves in this situation. Spiritually speaking, they are like dwarfs because they stopped growing.
A DEFECTIVE EYE, ECZEMA OR SCAB – Our eyes, our countenance, should reflect the Lord Jesus. You may be serious, but you should not be arrogant; you may smile a lot, but you should not mock others; you may reprimand, but with love, never with hatred.
Remove the arrogance, deceitfulness, envy, fear and inferiority from your life. You will become more approachable.
EUNUCH – A person that is unable to reproduce! A good assistant makes disciples. He must be reproductive, a soul winner. A good assistant attracts people’s attention and everyone wants to imitate him because of his good conduct.
Given these qualities, those who want to do the work of God, or are already doing it, should take good care of their inner appearance, so that God may use you more and more.
I hope to have been helpful in some way.
