APPEARANCE vs. ESSENCE: Palm Sunday and why the little donkey

Do you need a sign to believe in God? Is that faith? To believe by appearance and not by essence? A question that reflects your interests and ideals

We are coming to “Palm Sunday”; many people hear about it but don’t understand what it means. This date was before the sacrifice on the cross when the Lord Jesus entered Jerusalem through the eastern gate, the closest entry to the Temple. He was sitting on a little donkey and welcomed as if He was the king of Jerusalem. Many at the scene did not know what was happening. Still, they fulfilled an Old Testament prophecy that pointed to this episode.

It is written, “All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.‘ ” (Matthew 21:4,5). In other words, there was a prophecy that the Messiah, Israel’s true (spiritual) king, would come sitting on a little donkey. This means that it was in a simple way (without a horse, armies and a crown). A king with little appearance. And most people didn’t understand that and missed the opportunity to meet the King of kings. Those same people who were there days later said: “crucify Him”.

This brings us a lesson about how God works. The Bible explains: “At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes” (Matthew 11:25). In other words, the way that God chooses to manifest Himself is the humble, meek form, without display, ostentation, so that people who bow to Him do not do so out of interest, impacted by the shine and power that He has demonstrated. They are people who will recognise Who He is not by appearance but by His essence. We all want the people who live with us to do it for our essence, not our appearance. However, some people bow to someone’s authority (because this someone has the power to give and take), but, inside, they don’t care about the person.

So, how do you think God wants people to get closer to Him? Some say, “if God gives me an unmistakable sign, I will believe in Him”. But is it “faith” for you to believe after seeing the sign? Whoever does this wants God to bow to them. I don’t serve God for what He does in my life; I believe in Him for Who He is. And only those who live like this realise when God enters their life sitting on a little donkey (in a not-so-apparent way).

Thus, if you are “wise and prudent” in this world, you don’t trust your wisdom to see God. If you had the privilege of being born a very intelligent person and having conquered many things, recognise God in this, do not bring glory to you. Because as long as you deify your intelligence and find something, you, unfortunately, will not see the King of kings because He will not come riding on a white horse with an army, performing signs and wonders for you. Sometimes, He will come very subtle and even imperceptible.

On this “Palm Sunday”, come to search for the King of kings. If you think you’re a “little one”, be with us. Follow this message in the video above.
