BAAL TODAY
Who and what are your gods? They are not restricted to idols of stone, wood or plaster but can take various forms, representing anything or person who occupies the most important place in your life.
The story of God and the human being is an excellent story of love, betrayal, abandonment, forgiveness, rescue and salvation. All this and much more. Those interested in knowing the history of God and the human being as a masterpiece will understand that this story is about all this.
In the Bible, one book that deals with this in a more profound and even more shocking way is that of Hosea. You could do yourself a great favour and read this book. And in the beginning, God talks about the people of Israel, whom He portrays as a “wife” who prostituted herself and gave herself to lovers (the other gods). The Creator was faithful to her and did everything for her, but she embraced her lovers (gods who were not gods).
“And it shall be, in that day,” Says the Lord, “That you will call Me ‘My Husband,’ And no longer call Me ‘My Master,” (Hosea 2:16).
Interestingly, there is a pun on words in this verse because “Baal” means, in Hebrew, “husband”. And “husband” means “the one who cares, the protector”. And all this God wants to do for His people, like a husband who loves his wife and does everything for her.
God wants to take care of us, but when we choose other things and people to put our dependence on them, this action is the same as that of a woman who decides to change her husband. She chooses another man to be touched. She doesn’t want to open up to her husband because she finds another man’s conversation more interesting. She doesn’t want to stay home or sleep in the same bed. She wants to be in her lover’s bed. That’s how God feels: betrayed.
When we talk about gods, we find many things and people that can fit this description. Gods are not just wooden or metal objects made by an artisan and placed on a shelf. The Ten Commandments make it clear that the gods of wood and stone are an abomination. That’s why God commanded Gideon to destroy the altar of Baal (Judges 6). In other words, God said: “Have you put Baal in My place, and you complain that I abandoned you?”.
God does not allow us to make an image of Him because He is much greater than that. He doesn’t want the human being to make a god with their hands and bow to him. Whoever creates a thing is bigger than who was created. Therefore, if anyone can help me, this someone is the one who made me and not the one I created.
In addition, the moment the person turns their back on God, they will fill God’s space with other things. So, many people have put in God’s place the opinion of a doctor, lawyer, money, horoscope, friend, girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, son, a person who has already died, human intelligence, or physical beauty. And the proof that all this is above God is that a person does for it much more than they do for God. You do much more for Baal than you do for God. I will add more here: it is not wrong for you to go to the doctor, talk to a lawyer, study, and go to college. The problem is to raise this above God in your life.
So, if you want to turn to God, you should first sever your relationship with this Baal. Then things will start to change for you.
