Conscience is unique to humans. There is no indication that other beings have the consciousness about their existence, future, and past that humans do. Conscience is spiritual and divine, going beyond our matter. God gave us it, and the Bible says a lot about it. However, I want to focus on the famous “clean conscience.”

Many people use the expression “my conscience is clean” even to justify wrong acts and illicit and unfair things they practice. You may meet people who claim to have a clean conscience even after committing atrocities. So, the meaning of “cleansing” may differ for each.

We can say with complete conviction that we have a clean conscience when, in fact, it is unclean, especially about God’s standards of purity.
In Romans 2, the apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, talks about conscience:

“For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves.” (Romans 2:14)

God initially revealed His law to the people of Israel, but this law has not yet been revealed to other nations. However, Paul is saying that when the people of Israel left their limits, they found part of the law of Moses among the Gentiles that they had learnt. How do you explain this? These pagan people also practice the idea that stealing is wrong, killing is bad, and adultering is wrong. That is, they did not receive the tablets of the 10 commandments, but there are specific laws that seem to be written in their hearts, that is, in their conscience.

You can find an atheist, a person who does not believe in the God of the Bible but who, even saying that God does not exist, embraces the same teachings of Jesus.

There is no explanation for this, and we cannot attribute it to evolution. On the contrary, the theory of evolution preaches the law of the strongest, not that of the fairest. So, it is a contradiction to say that evolution has called this into question because the law of God teaches that the strongest must take care of the weakest and not eliminate them.

“Who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them.” (Romans 2:15)

God wrote the law in people’s hearts and gave them a conscience to accuse or confirm. Thus, conscience works like a judge.

Therefore, many people lose their peace and tranquillity and even get sick because their conscience constantly accuses them.

It is important to note that a healthy conscience guarantees that it has not been corrupted or cauterised. The Bible speaks of a good conscience and a clean conscience (Hebrews 10:22), but it also speaks of a defiled conscience (Titus 1:15), a weak conscience (1 Corinthians 8:7), and a cauterised consciousness (1 Timothy 4:2). A cauterised conscience is a person in such an advanced state of corruption that there is no return. These people lose the ability to judge.

Therefore, to judge myself correctly, I cannot rely only on my conscience but on the Word of God because it does not change or corrupt itself.

If you want to have a spotless conscience, you will have to use the “detergent” of the Word of God because only under its action can our conscience pass the cleaning test. Otherwise, you may be in the middle of filth, thinking that everything is right.
