HOW TO DEAL WITH DISAPPOINTMENTS, ANGER AND THE DESIRE FOR REVENGE
In the course of our lives, there will be many disappointments, and you may get angry, but it is not up to you to take revenge; this belongs only to God, and I tell you the best; He knows very well how to take revenge and do justice.
Someone asked me: “How do you deal with disappointment? It’s getting harder every day to trust human beings. Thus, when they disappoint us, we are sorry for the other’s mistake, thinking about what happened all day (and sometimes for days). How do we get rid of this horrible feeling that doesn’t take us anywhere? I don’t want to feel angry, but sometimes it even makes me want to act with revenge.”
I’ll try to help. First, I believe that all people share your feelings. We’ve all felt this: disappointment, anger and rage. And therefore, we are very tempted to seek revenge so that the person feels a little of the taste they made us feel.
Whenever you say, “I don’t know how to act when facing a situation,” you must turn to the Word of God. If there is anyone who suffers disappointment, it is Him. We see news and people’s opinions, but that’s only part of what’s happening. However, God does not depend on a news channel; He is not affected only by family members. God sees the past, the present and the future. He even sees what is in the human being’s head (and even what is yet to be done).
The Bible states: “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” (Romans 12:17-18).
In other words, don’t harm people.
Likewise, the world is full of cunning people wanting to deceive others, and many dishonest proposals are made, but you should look for what is honest.
And, as it depends on you, have peace with everyone. The person who is of God seeks peace. But the text is very clear. He conditions this attitude with: “if it is possible”. Sometimes, you get attacked, and you have to go to war.
He says more: “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord” (Romans 12:19).
Here, he is saying that we have to feel the anger. Anger will come, and it is legitimate for you to feel it. It is a symptom that something wrong is prevailing over what is right. It shows that you have a sense of right and wrong. It’s like pain: we don’t want to feel it, but it comes. Pain is a warning, as well as anger, that something is wrong.
But pay attention: “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord.” God reserved revenge for Him. Why did He do that? I can think of two reasons. First, only He is knowledgeable to do true justice. And second, God knows how to take revenge. He knows exactly how he’s going to do that. God is fair and doesn’t leave the wrong with impunity. Apparently, He may seem indifferent for a while, but He knows how, when and what to do to execute revenge.
So, if you’ve suffered humiliation, injustice or something like that, don’t be worried. Take all this (the anger, the rage) and give it to Him. Is it increasingly difficult to trust the human being? It’s true, meaning you should choose the people in your life well.
