IT’S NOT WHAT THEY TELL YOU, IT’S WHAT THEY DON’T TELL YOU
True justice does not weigh only on one side, but judges both sides. So always stop, think and assess the situation.
Don’t jump to conclusions, because there may be a very good explanation for what you understood otherwise. This is a more modern version of verse 8 of chapter 25 of the book of Proverbs. This shows, for us, a very common behavioural error: rushing to reach a conclusion.
Usually, when we let our emotions get the better of our intellect, we come to a hasty conclusion. And that can create problems for our life and other people too. It is true that when news of something revolting reaches our ears, our reaction is immediate with emotions (we are filled with anger, disgust and desire to take justice into our own hands). But we have to understand that most times, almost always, information comes to us in pieces, in selected parts (and, especially, when a person brings information wanting to get a specific reaction out of us, the person will filter one side and let only the other pass).
So, the prudence that is taught in the book of Proverbs tells us not to jump to conclusions. For example, biased news outlets, tend only to one side of the story. It’s a time when fake news spreads like wildfire. You don’t look for the news, they look for you. So check: what really happened? That’s what they’re talking about, but what aren’t they talking about? And sometimes what they aren’t talking about is just as important. So we live in an age where you have to wait before reacting to information. How many times have we seen a case where more information has come to light about a certain story and then, now, we realise the conclusion was wrong? Sometimes, the person who was a victim of this is socially excluded and even suffers irreparable losses in their life.
So beware! Don’t jump to conclusions. People like to pass on gossip and they tell their version, which favours them. Don’t think that everything they said is necessarily true. And, as the Text says, there may be a very good explanation for what you understood otherwise. True justice does not seek to hear only one side.
