John 17: See what He was asking for you
Learn more about the John Purpose…
Having already prepared the disciples, Jesus then prays for them and for Himself. He only has a couple of minutes before Judas arrives with the guards and a whole lot of suffering begins. So, He seeks strength and refuge in prayer. Note here the power of prayer to sustain us in hard moments. Never stop using this weapon. It’s at your disposal, anytime, anywhere.
Jesus made this prayer specifically for His disciples, not for the whole world: “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.” (v.9)
Another detail: the whole prayer He makes here is not only for the eleven disciples, but for ALL of Jesus’ disciples, including the ones today. “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word.” (v.20) This includes you and me too! As a young adult said, isn’t it “cool” how Jesus prayed for us, specifically you and me? Plus there’s no way the Father won’t answer His Son’s prayer in our favor. As long as you’re a disciple, consider yourself covered and insured by this prayer!
Another interesting point in this prayer is how Jesus makes it evident that He’s eternal, when He says: “And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” (v.5 and 24) He already existed before the world began. God is eternal. And that’s why He wants His children, who love Him, to dwell eternally with Him as well. That was the Lord Jesus’ mission on earth, just as He said in the beginning of the prayer.
as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. (v.2,3)
Do you want eternal life? Get to know Jesus. Knowing Him you will automatically know God, and in this way receive eternal life. That’s the Lord Jesus’ job: introducing people to the Father. During the John Purpose, you’re getting to know more of Jesus, right? Can you perceive this happening? Keep on going.
The last verse, in my opinion, resumes the whole relationship between God and His children:
And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them.
(v.10)
Could you make a prayer like that?
