What voice are you repeating? The one in the crowd or the one against the crowd
“You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice” (Exodus 23:2).
See the wisdom of God, who urges us to follow the opinion of the majority. You have undoubtedly heard that the right is right (even if few are doing it) and the wrong is wrong (even if most are doing it). But usually, people want to be part of a crowd. They want to be part of a group that is aligned with what they agree. So, the person finds a certain group that defends a certain flag or a certain ideology. And so they put on their t-shirt, start talking like that group and represent that group, but without even knowing, most of the time, what they are doing. People suspend reasoning and follow the crowd through feelings. And the Word warns us about that.
It is natural that the human being, even for the sake of survival, seeks to join the majority. After all, who wants to face the majority? Only truly convinced people. When the Lord Jesus was here, He faced the majority and was crucified for it. When you’re convinced, you don’t care. Despite having paid a high price, it was necessary (and that showed us the conviction of the truth that He came to bring us). The death of Christians was what most strongly promoted the belief they practised. “What is this belief they are willing to die for?”
So, the Word of God teaches us to reflect, not to follow everyone. A maxim in the Nazi propaganda of the time was: “Repeat a lie often enough, and it becomes the truth”. And they worked on propagating and brainwashing so that the population would speak as they wanted. We see these reports by information and photos, but at that time, some people submitted to that thought; educated people. That was the result of following the crowd and suspending the reasoning. “If someone is saying this and it’s an authority, the radio is talking, and my neighbour is talking, then that’s true.” But God calls us to intelligence and to align our thoughts with His. The world comes from “my truth”, but God is “the” truth. And thus, we will not run the risk of making mistakes.
Therefore, be very careful if you are following any ideology or some figure that has occupied a space in your heart. Usually, the crowd does not announce that they are doing evil; the flags say they are doing good. So, be careful with the voice you repeat. Don’t fall into the same hole as this crowd.
