PSALM 91: THERE ARE THINGS GOD CAN’T DO
If you don’t decide to be under God’s protection and allow Him to work in your life, He won’t force you to be under His protection.
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” To be under someone’s shadow, naturally, we need to be very close to them. Again, in this part of Psalm 91, we understand the idea of closeness and communion because God offers protection for those who have communion with Him.
If He is omnipresent, aren’t they all under His shadow? Not necessarily. Because a person needs to accept His conditions to have Him in their life, human beings must understand something sacred, which not even God interferes with, called “one’s own will”. When you were born, you were given a will of your own, which has been developing since you were a child. And when the child reaches adolescence, they want to express the independence of their will.
God created beings with their own will, and He respects it. He does not impose Himself on anyone. And many people fall for that famous question: “If God is good and powerful, why does He allow evil in the world?” Now, it seems like an intelligent question, but it isn’t. Because it is incompatible with having the freedom to do what you want and, at the same time, having a God who will protect you from that freedom. Either He gives you freedom, or He interferes in your life. Because people typically do not want God’s interference (they seek freedom, which causes problems in their lives and for other people), they reject Him.
God only interferes in human life when He is invited to do so. So, if you want to be “under the shadow of the Almighty”, you have to surrender your will to Him and be close to Him so that He has access to your life. At all times, not just when you need help.
When you are with God, you rest. There may be a war, but no one can take away what you have inside you. Those who have decided to be under the “shadow of the Almighty” rest. They have peace and pass that peace on to other people. It doesn’t mean they don’t have problems, but they are at peace.
The psalmist decided to call God “Most High”. There is nothing above God. He is the true Supreme. However, God can do everything, but he cannot contradict Himself. If He gave freedom, He will not take it away. People go to hell because they choose to go there by rejecting God’s will.
