How do you overcome spiritual discouragement? It has defeated many people who were once strong, firm, determined in faith, having communion with God, and closeness to Him, but today, they are distant and far from what they should be.

Spiritual discouragement makes people give up praying, reading the Word of God, going to church and forgetting what they once knew (biblical knowledge and experiences with God). This discouragement has a spiritual amnesia effect because the person forgets about testimonies and things they have achieved, and all they can remember now are the bad things of everyday life. And there is always some distraction to get them away from any attempt to return to communion with God. To work, travel, or do something, there is always courage, but when it is something spiritual a thought comes: “Now it is not possible” or “God will not listen to me because I have not spoken to Him for a long time”.

You must understand that you are under a spiritual attack, which aims to make your fire go out. While you have spiritual discouragement, the fire has not yet been quenched because otherwise, you would not miss the presence of God; you would live oblivious to it. But the fact that you feel this sadness is a sign that the flame has not yet been quenched. This spiritual attack is intended to obliterate you forever. So, you are in the spiritual ICU, at risk, and, therefore, you need to react.

And how do you react?

For a person who can’t go back to church, there is a spiritual attack. The moment they think: “I’m going back to church,” a force starts working, someone appears out of nowhere, the person sees the Bible and can’t read it. It’s a spiritual attack.

The only way to overcome this is, first, to understand that this is an attack. And second, it’s clear that these spirits have no more power than you. For example: when you don’t go to church, it’s not because they blocked you; they convinced you not to go. They put thoughts for you to decide not to go. If you want, you can go there now and get the Bible. Understand: there is a power in the human being that neither God nor the devil can touch, which is the power of choice.

You still have something stronger than this evil attacking you: the power of choice. So, use this power. All you have to do is say: “I’m going to church today”, ignore the voices and distractions and get there. You have to go to the Altar, say a prayer, ask God for forgiveness, ask Him for strength and resume what you did when you were in the faith. God says: “Go back and do the first works”.

Did you stop doing it? All right, pray today. Go on your knees wherever you are, close the door and talk to God.
