WHEN I WAS ASKED, “WHAT IS YOUR RELIGION?” AND I DIDN’T KNOW
Does what you say match what you do? Your actions show who you trust and believe in. Be careful not to become a "non-practising Christian."
I remember the first time I came across the question: “What is your religion?”
I would have been around 7 years old. The teacher asked, and everyone started talking. I started listening to what the other students were saying. And when it came to me, I said, “I think I’m Catholic.” Then, I remember getting home and asking, “Mom, what is my religion?” My mother said, “We are Catholics.” And I started saying that I was Catholic.
I’m saying this because most people in the world remain in the religion in which they were born. Sometimes, the family doesn’t even attend the place of worship (hence the term “non-practising Catholic”). I’ve seen a person say that he was a “non-practising evangelical.” And so the “non-practising religion” is born.
Unfortunately, people have no idea what faith is. How can you know what your true “religion” is? Let’s put it in quotes because the Bible does not use the word “religion” much. I am using this term to make it more coherent.
The Bible shows us that our faith is known by what we do. Because if what I believe is true, then what I believe has to be translated into actions. If my faith is true, the best way to notice it is to look at what I do.
If a person says they believe in the Bible but does not read it or practice it, they do not believe. If the person believed, they would be interested in knowing what God had written and would not fail to meditate on the Bible day and night. The person ends up deceiving themselves because the practice shows the opposite.
Once, the Lord Jesus said to the religious, “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it” (John 8:44). There was an uproar, but Jesus spoke the truth to alert them.
Research shows that many Christians or “people who believe in God”. There is a lower percentage of “atheists”. However, these surveys only replicate what people say. If you’re going to look, most people don’t believe in God.
What do we have to do with this information? We have to look at what we have been doing. Do you say you believe in God? So, what do you do with this faith? He who is of God obeys Him (John 8:47).
Otherwise, when you die, you may be taken by surprise. You might hear from God’s mouth: “I don’t know you”.
Reflect carefully on this and follow the entire message in the video above.
