When things are going awry
To go awry: to depart from the correct course; to become twisted; to fall apart or unravel; to fall into disorder. (Web dictionary)
At times in life, you will notice that something is going awry. Everything was fine until something went wrong at some point. At first, something too little to worry about. You did not think much of it, then another little thing went wrong, and yet another. When it finally dawned on you, the train was already off the rails.
- The diet was going so well, now you’re eating like there’s no tomorrow again;
- Your workout plan was on schedule, then a trip came up and you skipped a day, then another and now your muscles are flabby and your drive to start working out again is at zero;
- Your marriage was fine until it wasn’t: A little argument brought up that issue of six months ago that was never really solved. Now you are going through a crisis;
- Your bank account was in good standing until you, moved by your emotions, used your credit card. You thought you’d be able to pay it, but so far you’ve only been able to pay the interest;
- Your faith in God was strong until you committed one sin, then another, and now it’s still going like this. You don’t even pray anymore.
What to do then?
The first rule for someone who is in the hole is: Stop digging. Don’t do anything that will make matters worse. You’ve made mistakes up to now, but that doesn’t mean you need to continue making mistakes. Just stop doing the things that only make the problem bigger. Having a chocolate cake just because you are angry at the scale will not help you.
The second step is not magic, but it is simple: Start all over again. Do not underestimate your power to stop and start over right now, at once. You can start now doing what is right again. Reorganize yourself. Give up this state of mind of helplessness, guilt and weakness. You are strong and capable. Blaming yourself won’t get you out of the bad spot you’re in, but taking the first step will.
So decide you’ll take the first step right there, right now. Do the right thing. Do not look back. Do not wait until you feel like doing it; just do it. You next meal can be healthy and balanced. You can do a 10-minute workout today. Extend an act of kindness to your spouse just to show how determined you are to start over. Tighten up the belt this month to make a bigger payment on that credit card debt. Pray now, right there where you are and come back to the church this Sunday.
Take the first step. Then continue going in that same direction.
Things go awry to everyone at some point. The secret is to know how to stop and start all over again.
