WHY ARE THERE BAD EXAMPLES IN THE BIBLE?
Those who do not know history are subject to repeating it; therefore, God gives us examples of how not to make mistakes and how to follow the example of the only perfect one, Jesus.
When the Lord Jesus said, “I am the truth” (John 14:6), He would never hide who the men and women of the faith were. So, He records the history of the human being, the people of Israel, and the Church. From Genesis to Revelation, He recorded the flaws and qualities of men and women because He wants us to learn from their stories. We must know what to do and what not to do, what works and what doesn’t.
We don’t just have good examples; we also have bad examples. There is a saying that says: “those who do not know the story are destined to repeat it”. And many people, in their ignorance, insist on doing things that have already proven to be wrong. For example, how many marriages will need to be destroyed for you to understand that betrayal does not work? Everyone knows a story of betrayal. It won’t be any different. Mistakes are there for us to observe in the lives of others and learn.
Abraham told a lie. He made a mistake, and the Bible doesn’t hide it. Sarah urged her husband to sleep with the servant. There are the sins of David, the greatest king Israel has ever had, and all his pains are recorded. God makes it clear so that we, knowing about it, do not think: “With me, it will be different”.
So, be wise: learn from the mistakes of others. The Sacred Text also says: “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses(…)” (Hebrews 12:1). We are surrounded by such great testimonies. So, you can learn from these good people who are better than us. That’s why you have to evaluate the friends you have. Those who want to improve look at those who are getting better or already better.
He also leaves the advice: “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). There is the way for you not to stumble: look at Jesus. Because the Lord Jesus didn’t make a mistake.
Don’t look around. Even men and women who have good examples have their flaws. Don’t look at people expecting perfection. Look at Jesus. This is the secret. If you make Him your example, you won’t stumble. You look at Jesus when you look at His words in the Bible.
