This man lived in Gadara, across the Sea of Galilee. He was a person completely alien to civilisation. He lived in tombs, cut himself, did not sleep (because he walked day and night), and broke the chains that were used to bind him. These are behaviours that we see nowadays in many people.

For example, how many people can’t sleep? How many people break things in an outburst? How many people cut themselves, like that man cut himself with stones? The Lord Jesus found that man and removed that legion of demons.

However, the legion asked Jesus to send it to the swine. There were about 2,000 pigs there, and the herd rushed into the sea. Those who fed the pigs reported this to the city. When the rest of the city arrived, they saw the demon-possessed man (everyone knew him) in his right mind and dressed. That man was transformed for good. The people of the city saw what Jesus did for the man and what had happened to the pigs.

So, what did those people do? “Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region” (Mark 5:17).

Jesus allowed those demons to enter the swine to show us how humans value goods more than people. The people of the city saw the man freed, but when they heard about the swine that perished, they felt greater pain for them.

How many people will remove Jesus from their lives because they are bothered by His presence, and the impact His presence will have on their material lives? Look how interesting this is: the Owner of the whole Earth was expelled from that place.

This shows us how people see life. They say something with their mouths but do other things with their actions. They say politically correct things but prioritise their interests. They did not rejoice for the delivered man, but the fate of the swine saddened them.

And that’s why you see so much evil. People always put money above life and themselves. How many people sacrifice marriage to favour their professional careers? How many people sacrifice their virtues on the “altar” of business? They are people who deceive others.

As long as you prioritise material goods and use Jesus to achieve these things, you will live with the swine. To live a clean life, you must give up certain desires. You will have to make His will above yours.
