WHY DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE BUT YOU CANNOT CHANGE

You need to understand something important

In the 1st of November’s episode of the series “Reis”, there was a very interesting moment for the character Zeruiah, who was abused in childhood and, in her adult life, she gave herself to several men (as a result of this past). However, the character has been trying to change. She is already an adult and a mother.

In the scene, she said, “Sometimes I feel like old Zeruiah wants to come back.” And that’s exactly how many who try to change with the strength of the arm, with the strength of will alone, feel. I remember that I went through this in a stage of my conversion when I heard the Word of God and it convinced me of my sin and my wrong way of living, I decided for myself: “I’m going to change. I won’t be like that anymore.” This lasted two or three days. And soon I found myself going back to the practice of old works, feeling terrible because I couldn’t change, even going so far as to ask God to take away from me that desire to sin. But God does not take away the will to sin. He gives us self-control (the power to dominate our will).

So, inner change is only able to happen when a person allows God to enter their innermost and transform their lives. This is a work called “regeneration,” a “renewing of the Holy Spirit”: “For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3: 3-5).

This is what has to happen to you who are between your old and your new creatures. You try to be a different person and find yourself, from time to time, doing what you’ve always done. For example: “I will forgive that person”. And after a while, you find yourself badmouthing that person again, wishing them harm. And you realise that you haven’t forgiven them. You’re trying to change with the strength of your arm, with the works of your flesh.

What do you need to do? You need to understand that only God can transform a person’s interior. “Then why doesn’t He change me?” It is because it does not depend on Him. It’s up to you to hand over this old person you’ve been and say, “My God, I don’t want anything to do with this person anymore. I want the old creature to die, I want to give myself completely to You so that You will guide my life from now on. I want to live to obey Your voice, follow Your advice and do Your will (not mine).” Do you accept this? So make this decision now and give Him your whole life.
